We have decided to plant two apple trees this year as it won't be long before we will have teenage boys. I am planting a yellow delicious and a red jonathon.
I found that the Arbor Day Foundation (www.arborday.org) has very inexpensive fruit trees available for purchase. If you join the foundation for $5 you will get a discount on the trees you purchase with the discount being much more than the $5 for membership. The website lists which trees are good at pollenating other varieties of fruit trees. For many varieties, like apple and pear, you need two trees that can pollenate each other other.
If you are limited on space for fruit trees, you can now purchase trees with multiple varieties grafted into the same trees, so you need only 1, or a colonade tree which can be grown in a 17" pot.
